The Blueprint

A clear plan for the work ahead.

The Blueprint shows where your business stands and the work we'd do first. It ties what you want from the company to specific steps, who owns each one and how we'll measure progress.

    What you get

    What the Blueprint covers

    An assessment of the business

What we found in the seven areas below. It covers what's holding the company back and where the openings are, measured against what you want from it.

A plan, in order of priority

The work to do first, what each piece takes in time and cost, and the thinking behind what it should bring in.

    A way to measure progress

Each piece of work gets a number to move and someone who owns it, so you can see what's getting done and what it changes.

Some work can start right away. For a lot of owners, that's calling past customers and the people who got a quote and never signed. We agree on work like that as part of the engagement. It isn't in every Blueprint.

    The Seven Areas

    Seven areas we assess

    I

    Financial Performance

We look at where your revenue comes from, what you keep of it, and how much of it repeats. We also look at how much rides on a few customers and how good your reporting is.

    II

    Operations and Systems

We follow a job from the first call to the final payment. We look at what's written down and what lives in your head, and at what breaks if you're gone for a month.

    III

    Team and Organization

Who reports to whom, and which people can't the company run without? Could someone run it if you stepped back?

    IV

    Sales and Customer Acquisition

How do customers find you, and how many leads turn into jobs? What does it cost to win a customer, next to what that customer is worth?

    V

    Market Position

Why do customers pick you over the shop down the road? Where is your trade heading?

    VI

    Transferability and Risk

What do you want from the company, and when? We also look for anything that would worry a buyer or a lender, so you hear it from us first.

    VII

    Capital Readiness

We look at the debt the company carries, the cash it keeps, and how its books would read to a lender. It counts toward what the company is worth. Raising money is separate work, and it isn't part of the Blueprint.

    How it starts

The Blueprint is usually part of the first 90 days of an operating partnership.

We can also do an assessment on its own. Start with a free Walkthrough, and we'll work out which fits you. If we can't help, we'll tell you.
